I too am reading up on physics lately (I am an absolute beginner...never even took physics in high school!) I just started a book called "The Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene. Basically he takes you from the foundations of classical physics (Newton) to relativity (Einstein) and on to things like quantum physics and string theory. It's definitely not light reading, but it's written in a way that an "average" person without a strong math/science background can understand (lots of analogies to everyday things.) He also wrote a book called "The Elegant Universe" which looks interesting too.

I've read a lot about Quantum physics lately, and it really makes sense. I find it fascinating!
