The hippies I once knew (about — not personally of course) would love blogs because they (the blogs) are happening when it comes to building traffic naturally or what is called organically. Organic traffic is a blog’s forte. And traffic is what it is all about.

In researching bloggers, both successful and not so successful, those that created decent to great income from their blogs did so by building large amounts of traffic or visitors. I could not see that there was a definitive approach in attaining this. What was clear was that the blogger was committed to posting regularly on interesting topics. It was typically at least a year before anything of significance was noted.

One of the keys to gaining the organic traffic, which will most often come from searches on the major search engines, is getting your post/page ranked within the first or second page of a search. This has been the biggest surprise to me. I have posted on various topics and some not only get ranked in the top 10 or 20 selections on a google search, the results have shown up as quickly as FOUR hours after I published it!

Some of the topics that have been showing up in searches and bringing in traffic are the following:

  • Camelback Mountain
  • Flip Video Sample
  • Example of Personal Achievements
  • Colorado House Essay Contest
  • Buffet investing
  • Smooth Jazz

Now what little that I know, if I continue to put together relevant content over the coming months, I would hope that the daily number of visitors would exponentially increase with the number of posts. The question is whether to write for what is trendy and popular now or what interests me. I plan to continue on the latter. That will also offer the best chance of developing a readership which in the long run is far more valuable than the chance visitor.

Should the day arrive that this blog is actually profitable, I may be obliged to blurt out an appropriate FAR OUT! That would even make a hippie smile.
