Morning Coffee Wars:: Starbucks vs. Dutch Bros Coffee
I have made a recent change in my morning coffee routine. I’ve quit Starbucks. Now, before everyone thinks I sold out to begin with, let me explain.
I prefer to brew my own fresh ground cup in the morning using recently roasted beans and a French press. But as mornings go, I had developed the habit of stopping at a Starbucks and getting a regular coffee. The staff was pretty friendly and a few even got to know what I wanted and have my cup ready by the time I got to the counter.
Then Dutch Bros opened just up the road. As I have stated, I found their coffee to be really good. I would stop usually on weekends. So what happened that I now stop for coffee just about every morning at Dutch Bros?
Customer service! (or the lack thereof)
I’m pretty easy to please. I understand the business and how things can happen. But about a week ago I had finally had it. On occasion when going into the Starbucks, the half-and-half would be near empty or completely empty. I would politely take it to the counter and ask it they could replace it when they got a chance. If this was happening every now and again, I could accept it. But it became an every day problem! I am not making this up.
This became so common, I would start picking up the canister when I entered so I could give it to them before I ordered my coffee. After literally a period of 7 days in a row of this happening, I made the change. The last morning I placed the canister on the counter, the woman kind of looked at it and said she would take care of it. Well, that didn’t happen. She proceeded to take two more orders as I stood there with my cup of coffee.
By the way, I ALWAYS left a dollar tip every day for my $2.00 cup of coffee, so it wasn’t like they thought I was cheap.
Like staying in a bad relationship longer than you should, I put up with Starbucks longer than I should have and finally made the move. I now stop at the drive-thru Dutch Bros coffee kiosk. They know my order as well and often have it as I pull to the window. And every 10 cups they buy the 11th one. I mentioned in my first Dutch Bros post that the coffee is always made to order. I found out that their cup orders are actually made Americano style, a style of coffee prepared by adding espresso to hot water.
Dutch Bros is doing it right — coffee and service.
Do you have a Dutch Bros Coffee near you?

Wow. Very interesting. That is very poor customer service (at Starbucks) for sure!

I rarely go to Starbucks because I find the service to be consistently slow despite there usually being half a dozen staff members (or more) behind the counter. Like you, when I make my own coffee, there’s nothing like a French press.

I have just learned Dutch Bros have a Dutch Press coffee … am going to try it!
What I’ve observed with all that help that is behind the Starbucks counter is that they have these assigned roles. If a service request comes up and it is not within their assignment area, then it isn’t done. Not very good for the customer.

That’s just plain lazy of the Starbuck’s staff. I’m not a fan of their straight coffee. It has a burnt flavor that isn’t pleasing to my palette. $3 for a coffee is more than I’m willing to pay. Set up at home and enjoy in a nice insulated travel mug.
Occasionally, it’s nice to meet for some chat in a coffee place.

Hey Scott — Dutch Bros has opened in Colorado Springs. Let me know what you think. Order the regular dutch bros coffee. That’s about $2! they make it Americano style, meaning it ain’t going to poured from a POT that has been sitting for the last half hour.

Good thing you quit Starbucks. I just heard they are going to import their coffee beans from China (cheaper). There may be melamine in that!

Starbucks cannot compete with the excellent customer service and beverage quality provided by dutch brothers; dutch brothers treats everyone of their customers like they are your best friend. Starbucks on the other hand, has completely fallen down as a company most baristas act rude or annoyed if they have to provide you with any extra service besides pouring a cup of coffee! Nine times out of ten I receive poor service when patronizing Starbucks. In contrast, I have not had ONE bad experience from dutch brothers. STARBUCKS IT IS TIME TO STOP CONCENTRATING ON MAKING A PROFIT AND CONCENTRATE MORE ATTENTION ON WHAT MATTERS- YOUR CUSTOMERS!

Hi Lorraine — it is true that Dutch Bros culture really puts an emphsis on service. I rescently wnet to Starbucks when I was in Laughlin, NV …. guess what they were out of on their service counter? HALF and HALF!! Couldn’t believe it. They did replace it quickly though, after I asked for it. I have no problem with Starbucks making a profit and hope they do … but they definitly need to take a page from the Dutch Bros manuel on treating the customer like family!
Thanks for your comment.
