A Favorite Martin Luther King Quote
Martin Luther King :: His Dream was truly significant.
I heard this quote from Martin Luther King on the radio.
Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ — Martin Luther King
There is so much being discussed today about King and his impact. It is also particularly a more significant holiday with the inauguration of President Obama tomorrow. But this quote kind of sums it up for me.
When you cut through all the stuff in a person’s life, despite times of trial and testing, it comes down to this simple question. What we think about others, and do for others says everything about us.
King’s life is an example of hearing and seeing a need and doing something about it. For others.
I think life is lived too often thinking of ourselves. I’m not saying that this is necessarily a bad thing. In recent years, I have become more aware of needs happening around me. I just had to listen. The problem is that I have too often neglected doing something when it came to helping others.
So what have I heard recently? I am concerned about a couple of very hard working people that may not be able to finish their teacher education programs because of the 12 week student teaching requirement. I also feel the need to spend some time volunteering this year at the Childrens’ Hospital.
It’s about time to be mindful of what we are doing for others. And be urgent about it.
