Looking for a Church

After almost fifteen years, I started looking for a church again. I felt it was time. Maybe it was God telling me it was time. The problem I had was finding a place that wasn’t filled with hypocrisy, legalistic teaching, condemnation and the like. The gospel, as I believe, is about good news.
Back in Colorado I have a friend who had on numerous occasions tried to suggest that I check out a church she had been going to for some time. It was a Vineyard Church. I went one (1) time. It was different, in a good way. But the Sunday mornings at the restaurant were the busiest of the week and too often had the issues come up to deal with, ie. running short on something, arguments between employees, etc.
After moving to Phoenix, every so often we would be talking or I would get an email and she would sometimes asked if I had checked out the Vineyard Church, as she had heard that there was one here doing some good things. Finally, I decided to go.
My experience was much like the one I had in Colorado. First, people were very unpretentious. Some were in shorts and sandals, jeans and Dockers. The music was of a worship style that was non-traditional and was sung with a full, live band as backup. It was actually more meaningful. There were all kinds of people, as in all colors. There clearly was evidence of outreach to the community. The message was very relevant and was positive!
I have continued to spend most Sunday mornings there at North Phoenix Vineyard. I am sure that they don’t have everything right, who does. But there is a difference here that is significant. I believe finding people who are like minded in one’s search for meaning is important.
Here’s a good clip about the Vineyard Churches. Also worth mentioning was the Vineyard support of what I believe they call the universal church. They promote a spirit of cooperation of all churches, not believing they are the only way above the others.

It is hard to find a church sometimes. Glad you found one! I go to the vineyard too, so any san diego folks are invited to check out http://www.coastvineyard.org

Steve — have really appreciated the transparency of the people I’ve met there.
That is so cool, Toni. I will visit when I someday get back to San Diego!
