Colorado Snow and Altitude: Colorado Rocks
Moving from Ohio in 1969 to Colorado Springs, I have never in my life ever gone a season/year without seeing snow — until now. Having just celebrated my first full year in Phoenix, Arizona, I have for the first time in my life gone the longest time without seeing or enjoying the great feeling of Colorado SNOW. I miss it. A little. (smile)
There was nothing like the impending approach of a winter storm, promising 20 to 30 inches! Those were typically what on the Front Range of Colorado would be known as Albuquerque lows. They were to live for. For those that have lived it, you know that it was quite common that the forecast of these big storms were often mis-forecast. I’ll always remember the night prior to one of these big storms approaching and warnings being broadcast by radio, television, and emails! It seemed like a sure thing.
I was at Old Chicago that evening. I was with fellow teachers and we felt sure we would have a snow day for school the next day. It was cloudy and the storm seemed to be surely approaching. It started coming down! Needless to say, we stayed late. And then the inevitable happened. It stopped snowing!
And the next morning, the sun was shining and school was on. Bad decision that night before. So was the reality of a Colorado snow storm. There were many times I went to bed totally unaware that any snow was in the forecast, only to wake up with a foot or more on the ground. That is such a cool feeling. I have often thought the past year of planning a future trip back to Colorado arriving the day before a predicted winter storm.
Here’s my friend Steve rubbing it in after a recent snowfall for us in SUNNY and WARM Arizona. Note how COLD he looks!!!
I miss Colorado!
I once lived at an elevation of almost 6800 feet elevation. That’s a good snow making environment. Now I am at just over 1400 feet above sea level in the beautiful desert. In his unique style and perspective, Steve has humorously created a web page for his friends relative to their elevation. Everything in Colorado is relative to your elevation. He creatively has called it Alititude Snob.com.
I now regretfully now live at an altitude that all my friends in Colorado now look down on me.
Colorado snow and altitude — there is no other place on Earth.

Well Phil, you Arizonans will be drinking up all this water when it melts. It’ll come to you one way or another.

Lisa — hahaaa….C’mon! you’re talkin’ crazy. You guys LIVE for that weather.

Seriously, Phil…this winter is starting to wear on even the hardiest of Minnesotans. We just got 8 MORE inches of snow this weekend. I kid you not. The 3 feet we got in the first two weeks of April had finally melted. We had a beautiful week last week…70 degree days, even some green grass…now it looks like December again. Last weekend I was raking, now I’m shoveling! Winter is winter, but it’s almost MAY for crying out loud. I need to get out of here.

P.S. I wish our weathermen sucked like they did out in CO. But unfortunately for us, they’ve been RIGHT ON. When they predicted a winter storm for this weekend I thought, no way, this guy’s on crack…it’s 70 degrees out! Nope. 8 inches of snow. Ok whining /off/.

Lisa — I hate to tell ya, but there isn’t enough cheese in the state of Wisconsin to go with that whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine of yours.

Fine, Phil. Let’s see if I feel sorry for YOU when your A/C craps the bed some insanely hot July afternoon. THEN we’ll see who belongs in Wisconsin.

Heather — thanks for your comment. This will sound crazy, but I miss a good ol winter storm warning! I plan to someday go back to Colorado just before a predicted winter storm approach! That is why I have hung on to clothes I literally have been unable to even think of wearing because they are too warm. I didn’t even wear a coat last winter here….never! But as for living, Phx is awesome weather. ((Heather! It finally hit me
Good to know California is going well.))
